The gli library (https://github.com/davetron5000/gli) seems like an excellent fit for the interface. It would make sense to try it out instead of the homegrown solution in place right now.

Instead of fetching particular files, it would make sense to fetch the whole tree at a given endpoint. There should still be a particular file that is executed and one for the metadata, but the executed file may include a bunch of non-trivial logic, and that'll have to be split up.

Right now, there's like two hooks and they're rather simple. It would be a good idea to make the current hooks smarter (check which files were changed) and to add more interesting ones (rake db:migrate, geotagging, webcam screenshots) . For marketing reasons, if nothing else.

Some companies will only use gems with a certain license.
The canonical and easy way to check is via the gemspec
via e.g.

spec.license = 'MIT'
# or
spec.licenses = ['MIT', 'GPL-2']

There is even a License Finder to help companies ensure all gems they use
meet their licensing needs. This tool depends on license information being available in the gemspec.
Including a license in your gemspec is a good practice, in any case.

I'm using a script to collect stats on gems, originally looking for download data, but decided to collect licenses too,
and make issues for missing ones as a public service :)
