apex_video_kit_docs's Introduction

Welcome to the APEX Video Kit Documents!

Documents to accompany the mobile video kit created for the Audiovisual Preservation Exchange Program (APEX) of New York University. Kit includes the minimum amount of equipment needed to demonstrate digitization of analog video - excluding the playback deck and CRT monitor - and is designed to fit into a suitcase.

You can see more about the APEX program here: www.apexnyu.wordpress.com

In this documentation you’ll find:

  • A list and description of all the items in the kit
  • A step by step workflow for video digitization
  • Digital preservation basics to take care of your digitized collections

This documentation was put together for the AMIA AV Archiving Fair (New Orleans 2017).

IMPORTANT NOTE

This kit is intended for educational and demonstration purposes only as it illustrates the basic components of a digitization workflow so users can understand the concepts behind analog video digitization. There are many aspects to digitization stations and components can vary depending on many factors, which can certainly affect the quality of the resulting digital video.

apex_video_kit_docs's Issues

Suggestions RE balanced audio

I would suggest a few changes to the section about direct boxes and balanced audio. Black Magic devices can be set for either pro level or consumer level inputs (at least when using the Black Magic capture software - have to see how vrecord interacts with this) so perhaps just a note to double check settings would be helpful?

The difference in output levels between pro (using XLR) and consumer equipment (using RCA) really is what has to be watched out for rather than the balanced vs unbalanced signals, which just help protect against noise and interference in the cable rather than making the audio inherently better. I don't see much of an advantage in converting an unbalanced consumer level signal to a balanced pro level signal if the A/D can be configured to accept the consumer level signal as is. Theoretically you would have the same odds of your unbalanced cables picking up noise on their way into the direct box as you would going straight into the A/D converter.

RADD/PROUD/PRAVDA

Would you consider linking to Dorothea Salo's work in your Additional Resources? It's very similar to the work being done here (small, portable digitization stations). https://radd.dsalo.info/
