I'm the new coordinator for the South Dakota High School Press Association, taking over for Teri Finneman.

Also, we became the School of Communication and Journalism over the summer.

Below is my info for the listing on this page: http://jea.org/wp/home/people/scholastic-media-associations/

Contact form on front page needs captcha

@amasson99 :
Spammers are hitting our front page contact form very heavily. I suspect this has gone on for some time, but our old email service provider was blocking the spam emails coming to [email protected]. GMail is not blocking them, and our staff inbox is getting flooded with spam.

Please address this as soon as possible.

I suggest removing the contact form (provided by the theme?) and replace it with a contact form created with one of the existing form plugins we have. They have support for CAPTCHA, whereas the default contact form does not. Also, investigate how we can evoke Akismet to prevent form spam.

The Journalism Education Association is proud to unveil its latest member initiative – Link!

Link connects you directly to the JEA universe through personal one-on-one contact and support. Based on voluntary participation, Link matches new registrants (or those in need of a refresher) with a veteran JEA member to provide relevant and timely guidance. If you’d like help navigating all that JEA has to offer, click here to be matched with a veteran JEA member.

Link’s purpose is to provide positive member outreach regardless of geography, experience or program type.

The beauty of Link is its flexibility. Once a day. Once a week. Once a month. You decide. Once you have been matched with a Link volunteer, you can both work out how often you want to connect.

Sound intriguing?

We encourage you to review the slideshow on this page to see if Link is right for you.

Change front page calendar display so it feeds from our calendar plugin

We have a Wordpress calendar plugin we use to manage our upcoming deadlines and event dates. This can be set up to feed the Upcoming Deadlines and Upcoming Events blocks on the front page.

Once this is done, you won't have to update that any more, because Connie will be able to do it.

When you can, see if the plug in that Kate found works and populate with SF photos on the site.

Hi Rebecca,

Hope you're doing well. I'm updating my website with current work, but I wanted to keep my website from high school so you can use it as an example for future JOY applicants if you want. I moved the website from meghanbobrowsky.com to meghanbobrowsky.wordpress.com. I'll also link to it on my new website.

Solution for in-page navigation menus

Instead of using hand-coded markup inserted into the content areas on each individual page to display in-page navigation, we need to agree on a method that displays the Wordpress menus we already have.

We can't use widgets, like we used to, but we can use shortcodes. I've tested and installed a plugin that will display a wordpress menu using just a shortcode we insert into the content area of a page, but more work is needed to improve the styling of the menus.

We probably should do this before we add any more in-page menus on the site, or those would have to be redone.

Curriculum site Word documents have outdated hyperlinks

@amasson99 On this page (you'll need to be logged in to see it), http://curriculum.jea.org/wp/curriculum-map-samples/ , you'll see hyperlinks to download some Word documents - "Beginning Journalism", "Intro to Journalism", etc.

These documents contain numerous hyperlinks pointing to URLs on the Curriculum site. These hyperlinks all need to be updated to include "/wp" in the appropriate path location.

I have already corrected "Intro to Journalism", so you can use that one as an example of what I'm asking for. (An adviser needed that one, so I went ahead and made the corrections to that one already.)

Please download all the others, make the corrections, and send them all to me in a single email, and I'll upload them to the file system.

This is not urgent yet, but if we get many more phone calls on this, it may become urgent. That notwithstanding, if you could get this done by this time next week, that'll probably be okay.

TIME SENSITIVE - Semiannual report

@amasson99
We have a new semiannual report ready to publish, that needs to be done by Thursday, Oct. 11, and we may need you available for some follow up on this afterwards. This is a large report that will take some time to get done, so I strongly suggest not waiting until the last minute to begin work on this.

The content for the new report is here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wvadIoo3U-B8_rXkiYVI8Yy0VX8s6btpv9gM0FhUTc0/edit?ts=5bba340a

You can use this page as an example of how it ends up on the site: http://jea.org/wp/blog/2018/04/04/spring-2018-semiannual-report/

To start the report, you can just copy the report above into a new post, strip out the old reports, leaving the contact information for each board member submitting reports, then copy/paste each report into the appropriate space.

When you copy the text into the post, be sure to strip out any styling from the google doc before pasting it into Wordpress. I do this by copying it into Text Wrangler or some other text editor, then copy/pasting into Wordpress. But be sure to make the text bold/italic wherever you see it bold or italic in the google doc. Also make sure all the hyperlinks make it in.

Once you strip out all the old reports, you'll need to check through the list of personnel and make sure it's up-to-date. There have been changes in board personnel since the last report.

The head shots are mostly broken, but since there are bigger issue with head shots on the website, let's just remove them for now.

One thing we'd like different this time, is to start each person's report with a purple bar with the title and name of the person submitting the report, similar to what Val did in the google doc.

Hi Kelly,

My name is Patricia and I’m with the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) National office. As you may have recently heard, Kathy Chow is resigning from the position of AAJA Executive Director after eight years of leadership. AAJA is now kicking off a search for an ED who will work with the National staff at our office in San Francisco. I’ve copied in Yvonne Leow, AAJA’s National President. Feel free to reach out to her if you have any questions.

The application deadline is June 1, 2018 at 5pm PT. We appreciate if you could share this opportunity with any potential candidates in your network.

Here is the simple application. Let me know what you need to integrate this into the website like what is done with the Outreach Academy form (linked in previous email below).

We absolutely need a form instead of "email the staff." We can ask for specific information that can populate our fields easier. That way, we're just looking at the content to approve before it goes live.

That should be an easy fix. I can create the form in SurveyGizmo.

I'd like it to be integrated into the site, like this form on the OA page...

http://jea.org/wp/home/news-events/outreach-academy/outreach-academy-application/

For some reason we have others that leave the site, like this one...

I'll submit a ticket when the form is done.

I think it would be a good idea if we had a set form for our job announcements area. That way we would have a bit of continuity and our web folks wouldn’t have to spend too much time figuring it out before it is posted.

Someone asked today about updating our job postings but we don’t have any new ones to add.

We should add the application deadline.

In-page menus in the certification section

Alex,

This is something that’s been missing since the theme change in the in-page menus in the certification section. Their application deadline is approaching and they need the information on this page.

Plus, all the menus in that section need to be converted to the generated menus that we originally had for that section. If you just do that, it should also straighten out Pam’s issue.

So just take all those static markup menus from those pages, and use the menu shortcode to insert the Wordpress menus we created for those pages - “Certification_CJE”, “Certification_MJE” and “Certification_Commission” - these go on all the pages in the certification section. (That’s the page titled “Certification” and all the child pages of it.)

Hi, Pam--
I directed a potential MJE candidate to the FAQs for the MJE at jea.org. That information is no longer available. The rubric is there, but there once were sample responses as well as other information about the exam that are no longer available. Can we have the MJE FAQs back? The rubric can go with that information. The current FAQs tab is for the CJE only, but it shows up as a selection when the user selects Master Journalism Educator. MJE FAQs should go there.
