Wrong return value passed to PROMPT_COMMAND

The current HEAD does not pass the correct return value to PROMPT_COMMAND. Return value seen by PROMPT_COMMAND is always 0.

Expected:

$ PROMPT_COMMAND='PS1="($?) \$"'
(0) $ cat /etc/shadow
cat: /etc/shadow: Permission denied
(1) $

Current HEAD:

$ PROMPT_COMMAND='PS1="($?) \$"'
(0) $ cat /etc/shadow                                 
cat: /etc/shadow: Permission denied
(0) $

Fix single quotes with spaces around *

Fix the problem with echo ' * ' not getting interpret correctly:

Expected:

$ echo ' * '
*

Current HEAD:

$ echo ' * '
. ../ file_in_folder.txt
