I'm digging into this — it may well have something to do with the deep voodoo I'm doing to allow autoloading of views classes properly. I haven't reproduced exactly this issue, but am definitely seeing some jankiness around this stuff that I want to get rid of.
I'll also see at the same time if I can get Rails to stop trying to use Fortitude templates to render JSON responses — that's a great bug report, too.
Thank you so much for the extensive detail above! That's an incredibly useful bug report.

I think the commit I just pushed, 05e717c39fac59e72be8a880ec1e0790adee0ddd
, should fix your issue. I successfully reproduced it reliably using a Rails setup very much like what you described, and, with that commit, it has vanished.
If it doesn't fix the issue, can you let me know exactly what Rails and Ruby version you're using?
The tests are still messy, so I need to fix CI and add a more-reliable spec for this problem before releasing — but I think that should be the fix you need…

OK, my latest commits (up through 974f4ba) put in place what I believe is a complete fix for this issue, as well as a spec that seems to accurately reproduce the issue (i.e., when I comment out the fix). (It was actually a bit tricky to create this spec properly.)
Once I fix the issues with CI (which appear to entirely be about various niggling Rails version-compatibility issues), I plan to cut 0.0.6. Let me know right away if any of this doesn't fix the problems you were seeing.

So much better!
I've been trying out theses updates, and though I think I saw the error once, I couldn't reproduce it. If it keeps happening and I can pinpoint when, I'll let you know. In any case, thanks for figuring it out so quickly... this will really make life nicer.

Great! Really glad it worked for you. I just released v0.0.6 with these fixes, so you should be OK to work off the latest release version again.
