libtrace's Issues
Log a warning when start_span is called before start_trace
That's what logging is for!
Events and log messages going to CW should go to separate log streams
Right now, the tracing library has a debug-level logger that just logs to stderr
. Meanwhile, the events client prints JSON strings to stdout
. Both of these will normally go to the same Cloudwatch log group, but they have different formats, which will play hell with parsing the logs.
Figure out a slightly more intelligent way of separating logs from events.
Logging initialization is broken
GLOBAL_DEBUG would have to be imported after the call to init_logger
if I want to use it. This is weird and inelegant.
I should put all this into __init__
, but I had some kind of circular import problem. Figure it out!
Create @trace decorator for automatic instrumentation
Putting @trace atop a function should:
- retrieve the active trace (or create one if it doesn't exist)
- start a new span
- set the span to
root
if the trace stack was empty - add context to the span:
- function name
- function parameter names and values
- start time utc
- end time utc
- elapsed time ms
- error information, if an error occurred
- finish the trace if the span is set to
root
- otherwise, just finish the span
Don't box yourself in:
- it should be possible to retrieve relevant info from an HTTP request
