This would make it much easier to see all the notes and headings of a given topic.

This can improve the robustness of studying because it can force switching between different topics.

There are studies that show switching between different topics when studying may decrease the feeling of mastery, but in the long-term, it improves retention (and overall mastery) of the material.

This will allow objects to be longer than the width of the content.
