Okay, a little more Google-time and I see it is surely just a 'windows-path' issue. I will post my correction here, but I don't think there is any real issue here.

Hi,
It turned out it was not the code at all, but a GIT setting for linefeeds, where the UNIX style LF was converted to Windows style CRLF as part of the clone to local. So I needed to run this setting:
git config --global core.autocrlf input
