I'm considering how to implement the feature, more bumps are not going to help (however thanks for expressing your interest :-)). Also mentioning Emacs is playing it a bit dangerous; either you'll provoke me into adding the feature or it turns against you and I'll argue I don't want to turn Vim into an OS ;-).

Edit: Although you could argue I'm already hard at work in turning Vim into an OS, soon I won't have to leave Vim at all, mwuhaha!

well, at least this OS will have a decent editor:)

i have a rather vague idea of what vim can and cannot do. as i understand it doesn't have any kind of built-in timer but it can receive notifications from another process via a pipe combined with 'autoread'. can this route be used to build a general purpose notification framework?

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I just released version 1.8 of the vim-session plug-in which introduces support for automatic, periodic saving of active sessions with the g:session_autosave_periodic option. I'm closing this issue now. If you have any problems with the new feature, feel free to reopen this issue or create a new one.
