@domenic also voiced concerns.

How about just "app-color" ?

๐Ÿ‘ to app-color as "brand" doesn't fit with non brand based sites.

application-color might fit more with the ms based application-name

Even more generic would be more appropriate: main-color, canonical-color, or primary-color.

Why? The color could change per-page within the app. Pages under example.com/foo/ might be a different color from the rest of the Example app.

I would go for main-color. It's generic enough and easy to remember. Not everything is an app.

It seemed that everyone will name it by its own way.
We want to name this "brand-color" mainly because we want to convey that this color will be used to represent a website's identity in various places in the UI.

"brand-color" delivers the clear message that this color will give page distinct view. I feel app-color, main-color and primary-color, just like titlebar-color, navbutton-color will limit how this color be applied in the long run,

What is your response to the people saying that brand-color limits how the color will be applied in the long run, because it is only applicable to brands?

from meta-theme-color.

mbai avatar mbai commented on May 31, 2024

If I recalled correctly, the comment said that brand is not for personal page. If I use the brand-color in my personal page, and want it have distinct view, I actually want to build my brand - personality.

I suggest you look up the definition of brand, e.g. on Wikipedia and see how it won't apply to plenty of Web properties, some of which will even feel offended by having to use such a term. There are plenty of names most of us could live with. brand-color isn't one of those.

I'm sure reaching consensus on a name isn't that difficult. In order to do so, I suggest listing a number of criteria that name should fulfill. For example:

  1. It should be inclusive,
  2. It should not be descriptive as to how it's going to be used by the UA,
  3. It should be consistent with CSS,
  4. It should allow for future extensions.

It's then fairly easy to agree on a name based on its technical merit (i.e. how it fulfills said criteria). Hope this helps.

How about ua-page-color?

It is defined per-page so isn't really a site colour though it might be used that way.

It does not specify how the UA should use it, though perhaps hints at it.

In color theory, a color scheme is usually defined by a set of colors (2 to 3):

  • the dominant color
  • the subordinate color
  • an accent color

The brand-color corresponds to the dominant-color.
