I think its not working properly because I did not set the JAVA_HOME variable.

Thanks. Can I close this issue?
Also keep in mind that Atlassian will only support jira if you are using Oracle JDK / JRE. openjdk/jre are not supported.

The current OpenJDK works fine so far. Given its current status as reference implementation it might be supported in near future - at least I hope so. Other attlassian apps supports OpenJDK (stash).
