I use the "~/.extra"-file so that I can overwrite some personal settings e.g. user.email
PS: here is the example -> https://github.com/voku/dotfiles
from dotfiles.
user.email was only an example. There are lot's of things which are normally configured by a simple
git config --global ...
In my opinion, chances are high that in daily work these things end up in .gitconfig and not in .extra, also because the config file is not modified directly...
Maybe let's wait for other opinions. I am going to test my idea in my fork. I am not sure if it's really a better solution...

Not happy with any of the alternatives. So i go for a third one, which i implemented in 5088ad1a161494200dc31a5c8053540e0a276166 and f0b8c565222c3d1d5bfc13ab1a8749dfb0fb1ef4
It just prints differences in the .gitconfig file in a way that it's easy to add it again. It's up to the user to do it or not.

I understand your point, but in daily work I only touched the global git config once. I added some settings and ready to go ... for me I don't need to re-configure something in the last months! :)
