If issue #96 is accepted, this would close this issue because it would be really easy to tell Vertx that the TemplateHandler (and not the template engine) should not block. Something along theses lines:
router.get().blockingHandler(TemplateHandler.create(engine));
from vertx-web.

This one works well
from vertx-web.
