We have all of those goals: eliminating concerns about third-party distribution, avoiding tracking and checking in binaries, and making this a proper Maven project with specified dependencies.
My intent was to have the Maven packaging finished before people knew about the new Github repo, but I saw no reason not to go ahead and make it public. So it's a work in progress.
I'll roll HEAD back to the previous state and do my maven cleanup on a branch for now.

Our tool by default is Maven, but we're open to hearing about better options.
