What version of Android are you running?

I noticed this too on Android 4.1 devices but it seems like google improved the quality of the album art returned by the mediascanner in Android >= 4.3.

But having an option to tell VanillaMusic to use 'cover.jpg' file in the directory of the song would probably make sense.

I'm using Cyanogenmod 10.1.3 which is based on 4.2.2. I think it would be
a good idea to have this functionality regardless of the new mediascanner.
I think the smaller thumbnails that the media scanner generates are most
useful for players that have album view with album art thumbnails. Maybe
in the future if you decide to add such functionality you can switch back
to mediascanner thumbnails. The player currently does read my folder.jpg
images if I delete the mediascanner thumbnails folder, but this is only
temporary until the thumbnails get generated. Maybe it follows the default
android album art file look-up. I think it will display cover.jpg,
albumart.jpg, folder.jpg and maybe [album name].jpg. I'm not sure the
order in which they are prioritized.

I really appreciate your reply, and I have to say that I truly love and
enjoy using VanillaMusic.

This will be fixed in the next release: (and already is in the git version): Vanilla can now load cover art on it's own.
