Hi,

We've discussed this in the forums - here are a couple of discussions with some info and also code samples how to change the default behavior if you'd like to do it:

http://www.smartmenus.org/support/forums/#/discussion/comment/70
(code samples to make the whole item just a toggle button)

http://www.smartmenus.org/support/forums/#/discussion/comment/131
(code sample to split the item into two targets)

But in short, I have seen many different approaches to similar collapsible menus on mobile (I believe there aren't any official guidelines). Basically we've chosen this default behavior because it allows the links of parent items to be activated even when they have sub menus (i.e. on the second click/tap) and at the same time the items remain a single tap target as opposed to having another smaller hit target inside the item to toggle just the sub menu (arguably this improves usability for regular non-tech users who might not realize how to display the sub menu).

To be honest I was also very hesitant what to choose for the default but in the end went with the current in favor of the 2 separate targets approach.

Anyway, let me know if you have any suggestions/comments.

I've decided to leave it as is.
However I've observed one other UX issue. When you open about menu, and then you decide to open support , then about closes down and support opens. What happens is that support submenu jumps up ,and it's not under the user finger anymore.
Is there a way to leave the about open?

The other option would be the iPhone approach: A right-pointing arrow / closing pointy bracket (bigger-than char) or just two / three dots take you a level deeper, hiding the rest, the current parent level only being indicated by its title, sitting above and pointing backwards.

The Android UI has adapted that, to some extents, as well (native settings menu).

@ikixxx Yep, that's a slight issue with the default behavior. I guess it would be quite easy to keep about open via some API tweak but this would mean that once a sub is expanded it can't be hidden any more. Would that be OK for you?

@ginsterbusch Those don't allow links to be added/activated to the parent items. But, yes, such drill-down menus are also used on the web though I believe they are more popular for apps.
