Have you considered using remote data for this ? Hosting your data on any server with an URL and using this URL for a given layer as data source.
Replacing based on filename is indeed an option. One other option that comes to my mind would be to allow dragging explicitly on a layer name (wherever this name is, on the data browser, on the layers list…).
