You can also use the Custom Layout Card to determine the position of individual cards more precisely:

It may look a bit complicated at first, but once you understand it, it makes configuring certain layouts much easier later on 😉
Here is an example of my lovelace-minimalist.yaml configured with it

You should put it in the horizontal stack.

Nope, it just adds "padding" but doesn't fill the space
