I managed fix the issue above by installing typescript 1.6 for Visual studio. I also replaced old import syntax to the new es6 way. Now I have a different error complaining that You may need an appropriate loader to handle this file type.
I came back to to your blog about Typescript with ES6 and able to fix it by using Babel loader as Webpack does not support ES6 yet.

Glad you got it fixed. I've never seen that error before.
ES6 isn't strictly necessary but is certainly the way forward.
