Hi @Spacemutiny,
I don't know where it says anything about MC2.DAT in a readme file. But currently the safest branch to build from is my stable branch: https://github.com/GrimSqueaker/remc2/tree/stable
The README.md there also has been updated by @thobbsinteractive with a step-by-step guide for building and a batch script for extracting the necessary files from the GOG version.
