I tried this from samba on the same box, and I get a similar message:
smbclient "\myhost\nas" -U myuser
Enter myuser's password:
Domain=[MYDOMAIN] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 4.1.16]

More information. It seems to have broken in 1.7.0 in 1.6.0 I can mount everything fine in 1.7.0 it fails.
I also tried to mount a "lower" directory, when I use 1.7.0+ I can't even see the mount point in samba.
