Maybe a more general literal syntax, via a macro:

// Query[(Int, List[String]), (Int, String, Option[Int])]
q"""
  select id:Int, name:String, age:Option[Int]
  from person
  where age < ?Int
  and name in (?String*)
 """

Although this does violate the desire to never mess with user SQL. Blech.

I was thinking about implementing this atop of query fragment abstraction
q"select id, name, age from person where age <".bind(age) ++ q"and name".in(names)
