Regarding 1. there are indeed a few things that break when the compiler strictly meets the minimum integer size requirements. The attachment shows the compiler warnings. I'll work on a PR to fix those 😊

The hard way: I replaced all integer types by macros (int --> INT, #define INT int16_t, unsigned short --> USHORT etc.) It thankfully didn't take long. I couldn't find a gcc flag to make it simpler, and I guess I'd have had to find a 16-bit build of SDL2 anyway.
