Hm well, the chmod call is here since a while. I'm wondering why it's causing a problem just right now.
Would the deletion of the chmod call sufficient to solve the problem on your side?

If I comment out line 110 in the Compiler.class.php file, then it works fine on WP Engine. So, I'll go with that. Thanks. Hopefully, this issue helps others that run into this problem with a premium WP host that doesn't permit chmod().
