This is likely an issue with your code, and not this script per se:
chances are you call document.getElementById([elementID]) before the loaded HTML file actually gets inserted into the target document's DOM.

Depending on your requirements (for instance if you happen to include just one html file), you could just move your code and put it inside the callback function.

But if you need something more genric, you will have to elaborate on this script.
One direction could be to hav it raise custom "fragmentLoaded" events your code could subscribe to -- can't anticipate if it would be easy to implement or not...
