One side note [irrelevant really given that the 'net' module currently just always binds on INADDR_ANY regardless] but technically I don't think you want to listen on "localhost" — that would [if things worked more standardly] make your server unreachable on the WiFi interface.
For clarity, this note doesn't make a difference to the bug itself and AFAIK has nothing to do with it's unreliable in practice / right now, but someday this sample code might be reliably "broken".

More on-topic: does your corporate WiFi network isolate clients? There's a chance this is more of a network-level issue, where your wireless router is firewalling packets, rather than a Tessel/CC3K issue.

I'm pretty sure its a network-level issue. We changed some configs on our wifi network and now Tessel connects super fast but I can only ping it about 30% of the time.
