For those following along at home, nodejs/node-v0.x-archive#8005 has some potentially related discussion to troubles with Socket.IO using a binary addon (which is problematic on Windows in their case). Interestingly, nodejs/node-v0.x-archive#8005 (comment) says there is a vanilla-JS fallback.
No idea if this helps, but figured I'd make mention of it here before I closed the tab I'd found.

It would be nice to get an update on this. Last I checked, there was still quite a long way to go before something as complex as socket.io would work on Tessel.

I just tested it out on Runtime and the only blocker to basic demos is some bug with the way socket options are merged with defaults. Other than that, I was able to open websockets between two instances of the runtime. Looking into the bug now.

Upon further investigation, it looks like the issue boils down to #126, originally reported by @kevinswiber. @tcr what's the status of that nil-hash-values branch?

Still hairy, basically blocked by the tcr-jit branch and further work. Or, if it's dealing with "null", we might be able to cheat ahead of time.
