The Daikin thermostat is not required for the integration to function. As long as your gateway is plugged in, you should be able to get something out. The integration connects directly to the gateway, thus in theory, you should be able to read the energy consumption as long as your gateway is wired properly.
Although I have not tested it with the model you have, other users have reported that it works successfully.
I am not too much familiar with the Opentherm and how you have connected it, so I might be wrong...

In my case the Gas Boiler would go in an error state if I power it on without the Thermostat (DOTROOMTHEAA) connected while also having the gateway (DRGATEWAYAA) installed.
