It removes 'special characters'. about emacs_chrome HOT 7 CLOSED

Just testing it a bit. My buffer sais it is unicode.

Esperanto: E o an o iu a de.

Is emacs running in UTF-8 mode?

I'm not aware of any UTF-8 mode for emacs. I think the encoding may be different per buffer, and it should not matter what 'mode' my emacs is in.

Indeed if I do:
mkdir ~/.MacOSX
defaults write ~/.MacOSX/environment LC_ALL en_GB.UTF-8
and logout en login then it seems to go better.

Test:
Dutch: Café tweeëntwintig
Hebrew: דשךצ
Russian: перестойка
esperanto: Eĥoŝanĝo ĉiuĵaŭde

But I still fail to understand why it is important. The coding of the textarea is known, or at least independent of
emacs, and emacs is aware of what it does, so I don't see why I have to decide something beforehand.

I've merged a patch to ensure the response text is always encoded as UTF-8 before being sent back to the browser. Can you check and see if this solves your problem?
