The bit above about the paths being automatically added to the precompile paths is out of date, so you'll need to add in config/application.rb
:
config.assets.precompile << "tinymce/skins/custom/*"
They shouldn't need adding to application.css.scss
.

For custom skins and plugins, just make sure the files are in your asset pipeline load path and locatable at a path such as tinymce/plugins/mycustomplugin
or tinymce/themes/advanced/skins/mycustomskin
.
e.g. app/assets/javascripts/tinymce/plugins/mycustomplugin/editor_plugin.js
These paths are automatically added to the precompile paths and won't have digests added to their filenames.
I'll add a note about this to the readme file for the next release.

When you say 'the files are in your asset pipeline load path' are you doing a require in the application.css.scss file as well? Everything works in development but when I push to production all of my skin files fail to load.
