Very interesting chapter.
As a reader I really enjoyed your analogy of collecting data to digitize the length of the day. I also liked the example of adding contours of Mont Blanc etcetera. Very inspired. However, as a reviewer, I must say, if the length of the chapter becomes an issue, perhaps the one section that could be dropped without detriment to the flow of the article is indeed the one on the contouring. If however, it is to stay, then "We will come back to ‘prior’ and ‘making things up’ in part II of this tutorial/editorial series*" needs a link or a footnote as hinted by the asterisk (in addition to what noted by @dabiged above).
