But of course! You completely discarded "start" in the first code and restarted with mempty on line 4! Would you mind correcting that and letting us know if the problem is still there?

@ozataman ok, it's a bit of both: having corrected the first example (which I think was just a cut and paste error when I composed it to put here; I was testing something sensible). It turns out you can specify command line options (ie ./server -? works) but command line options such as -p for port are ignored. That make sense, since it is being overridden subsequently. My mistake for testing with -p and wondering why it didn't work.
