A test project has been created that demonstrates how metadata can be retrieved by these methods.
It does cover much of the metadata relating to the database. However, it lacks information about things like primary, unique, and check constraints, in addition to triggers.
This may be OK and a combination of SQL queries and GetSchema()
may be a good and performant approach.
Further information on what can be retrieved from GetSchema()
and the usage thereof is documented here:
- https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/framework/data/adonet/common-schema-collections
- https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/framework/data/adonet/schema-restrictions

Decided to close this issue for a few reasons.
- Not portable between different database vendors.
- Limited or incomplete information returned from the database.
- No async API.
The test project has been stored at https://github.com/sjp/SqlServerSchemaTest in case it's decided that the approach will be revived.
