I'm sorry for not realizing that I did not have the latest version. GitHub said 5 months ago and I know I downloaded when it was a few days and assumed that was the latest. On first attempt Inkscape crashed - I think it was a coincidence even though it has not crashed a lot lately after v1.0.1. Restarting Inkscape again Hershey text worked as it should without converting the font-file to UTF-8. The output file from the Custom Stroke Font now reads "ANSI as UTF-8", just like your example file. (I'm on Windows 10, but I don't know if that is relavant anymore as case can be closed).

Thank you for a super extension!

Thank you for the detailed bug report. I tested (both in Linux as well as Windows) the font data generation with the Aring character you mentioned in the issue.
The generated file has the correct encoding(UTF-8). I was also able to use the generated font file with Hershey Text extension of Inkscape without any problems. You might want to check the file type before you manually edit it. Maybe the text editor (Notepad++) is changing the file type.

Please let me know if you still face any issue.

I am attaching the test SVG file and the generated font file for your reference.
(Please change the extension to svg)

I did this test today: Generated a font with the Custom Stroke Font extension. Without opening or changing it in any way I tried to use the Hershey Text tool with the file. The same error again. Then I opened the file in Notepad++ and did nothing but converting to utf-8 and then tried once again with the Hershey Text tool with no error this time.

The Aring_gen_font_svg.svg you generated returned no errors.

In NotePad++ the Aring_gen_font_svg.svg says ANSI as UTF-8, the file I generated with the Custom Stroke Font says ANSI and when I convert to UTF-8 it says only UTF-8. (I don't know if this helps you troubleshoot, but at least that is what I noticed.)

The custom stroke font files I have are dated 8.8.2020. Is this the latest version?

Here are the generated font and the file after changing it to utf-8 using Notepad++ (change to .svg):

I think you are using the older version. Please try with the latest add-on from github.
Also, what's your OS?
