Yes, this is STFT:

But it is only used to calculate the matching filter FIR:
https://github.com/sergree/matchering/blob/master/matchering/stages.py#L119

This FIR is then used in the convolution (on an unchopped input):
https://github.com/sergree/matchering/blob/master/matchering/stage_helpers/match_frequencies.py#L112

Using this scipy function:
https://docs.scipy.org/doc/scipy/reference/generated/scipy.signal.fftconvolve.html

Not sure if it can make clips.. Considering that the audio is then processed by the brickwall limiter.

I assume that other types of distortion appear here. Maybe the target has very little information in the side channel, and you hear the rounding noise. I can't say for sure.
