I would like to reopen this issue because it does not appear to be working at all (from what I can tell).

I tried setting the value of an input or select, then I tried triggering change on it. Select2 does not reflect the updates.

If this is not phoesable, then an alternative solution would be to set some sort of flag immediately before updating the value of the native element, and then removing the flag immediately after (so that I may differentiate between changes caused by Select2 vs external code)

Nevermind, this works, just not for ajax mode, which I suppose is a different problem entirely (since you essentially must do select2('val', [{}])

like the docs say, you have to provide your own impl of initSelection function that can translate ids to objects.
