You installed LuaJIT to a non-standard location, so you need to add its lib directory to your LD_LIBRARY_PATH to make the system shared library loader aware of it.

First, thanks for the response.

So, make install for LuaJIT installs in a non-standard location? /usr/local is pretty standard and pkg-config found it, there, or at least said it did. I got pkg-config found LuaJIT version 2.0.0-beta10 when I was running the python setup.py build above, you'll notice.

I'll try the LD_LIBRARY_PATH anyhow, though, when I get a chance.

/usr/local is not standard at all, at least not on your system, as your problems show. Apparently, pkg-config searches it, but your shared library loader doesn't.
