Set up a real S3 account, tried the same scenario, and both PUT and GET worked fine.
So there's something wrong in s3ninja...

Could you give AWS SDK 1.8.4 a try? That's the version we're using (which
works quite fine)

Sorry, I can't: the oldest version available of the aws-java-sdk-s3 on Maven Central is 1.9.0: http://mvnrepository.com/artifact/com.amazonaws/aws-java-sdk-s3
Maybe you guys can try with a more up to date version?

We use http://mvnrepository.com/artifact/com.amazonaws/aws-java-sdk to
access S3 (CEPH) - I'm not quite sure why Amazon does provide two client
libraries. Cloud you give it a try?

Sorry, our code uses SDK features not available in 1.8.4.
Feel free to upgrade to a more up to date version, and I'm sure you'll run into the same problem.
