Same issue. I deleted existing .prettierignore and prettier.config.js, ran npx ng add @schuchard/prettier and still get the error.

I see this when updating from 4.0.0 to 5.0.0 of this library in the package.json. Should I be using ng update instead?

Hrm, that didn't work

I tried to reinstall prettier and got this error:

npm i prettier --save-dev
npm WARN rm not removing /Users/splaktar/Git/xxx/node_modules/.bin/prettier as it wasn't installed by /Users/splaktar/Git/xxx/node_modules/prettier

Doing rm node_modules/.bin/prettier and then npm i prettier --save-dev again fixed it. I agree with the OP that this schematic should not be overwriting the prettier symlink.
