Because of time constraints, I ended up just removing this and using a combination of UIRefreshControl and a custom class as a replacement in iOS 5.0. I spent a little bit of time trying to figure out what it was, but it wasn't anything obvious like an observed bounds property causing too many drawing cycles or anything like that. I can set up a test project that reproduces an issue at some point, if that would be helpful.
