There doesn't seem to be much code tied to ActiveFedora. It's mostly the source and output files, which it looks like Hyrax has already provided an alternative for. Is it worth considering pulling the ActiveFedora code out into a separate gem, e.g. hydra-derivatives_active-fedora and only providing a simple implementation in the main gem of the source and output services, e.g. local file?
