Right now I'd like to focus on improving the experience of streaming media. Someday I might get around to local file support, but for now I'd recommend trying existing tools like Syncplay.
In addition, the difficulty comes from playback of various file formats in Metastream. Tools like VLC support basically every media format available so they're a much better choice for local files. To support this in Metastream, I'd need to transcode media formats for use in a browser environment—not a trivial task.

Regarding transcoding media format for use in a browser environment, perhaps the ffmpeg.wasm project could be a solution here?
