I've taken a deeper look and it seems like it's just a naming thing.
Even though it says unvote_up and unvote_down, they both behave exactly the same. You can clear an upvote with unvote_down because they are aliases of unvote_by. The naming suggests one would have to use the correctly named method, but you don't have to.
It's a trivial matter of not using those aliased method names.
The only change that would be helpful is merely indicating in the README.that you don't have to match the alias with the up/down semantic
Lets consider this closed.
