I'm not really looking to fool around with card states, as that introduces more lag. Every time the state of an object changes, there's a really irritating loading period in which is loads the new textures. Combined with people who would just troll and click on all of the cards, this wouldn't make for a good playing experience.
I was, however thinking about maybe instead of a grayscaled background, the back of the card is completely black and has what looks like an "engraving" of the word on the back. It's subtle, but enough to be able to still see the word. Do you think that might work?

Sensible. But don't think Haniis deck maker can do it, we probably need something more robust in that case.

I thought it was able to. You can edit designs on the fly.

Hanii's deck creator now has this functionality included in it. I will be updating all decks shortly to have a ubiquitous format - normal card on the front and blacked-out on the back side.
Link for the updated Hanii's deck creator will be posted as soon as it's available.
