This is a known limitation: there is a race condition between the response that Queue#message_count expects and incoming messages. The solution is to not use Queue#message_count inside message handlers: it is typically not necessary anyway.

Hi,I need to know the # of items on the queue, therefore to change consuming strategy. How I am supposed to get to know how many items within this queue inside subscribe bracket? other alternative methods?

With Bunny, I don't think there is a way that won't hit the same problem. Number of messages and consumers is retrieved using queue.declare with passive attribute set, so clients need to distinguish between queue.declare-ok responses and basic.deliver deliveries. Bunny does not really do that.

amqp gem does not have this problem and in general is much more suitable for consumers. Hot Bunnies is another option.
