Occupying this middle-ground of “oddly technical, yet does not understand things” can make it hard to partner and communicate with the broader software engineering organization.

I am pretty conflicted about this idea in general, I don't really think there is a great dichotomy between 'professional software engineers' and analysts / data scientists.
Maybe because I came to DS from a more traditional CS background rather than visa-versa.
There is plenty of brittle, bug ridden code being written by both camps that no-one should be looking down on the other. Everything sucks but let's all try our best to make it a little less bad.

The aspect of this that I like is to acknowledge that it's normal to be very high functioning in certain domains and relatively clueless in others. Some of the asymmetry comes from this: data scientists are forced to confront their lack of experience in sw engineering / devops more often and more publicly than swe / devops folks are exposed for not knowing much about stats or how to make good visualizations.
