FWIW I have this function for grabbing the visual selection:
function! GetSelection()
let old_reg = getreg("v")
normal! gv"vy
let raw_search = getreg("v")
call setreg("v", old_reg)
return substitute(escape(raw_search, '\/.*$^~[]'), "\n", '\\n', "g")
endfunction
which I just tried in these mappings:
xnoremap * <C-c>/<C-r>=GetSelection()<CR><CR>
xnoremap # <C-c>?<C-r>=GetSelection()<CR><CR>
and it seemed to work as expected: all occurrences of foo
were highlighted and pressing n
moved to next occurrence:

I'll give that a try, thanks for the tip!
