FWIW I have this function for grabbing the visual selection:

function! GetSelection()
    let old_reg = getreg("v")
    normal! gv"vy
    let raw_search = getreg("v")
    call setreg("v", old_reg)
    return substitute(escape(raw_search, '\/.*$^~[]'), "\n", '\\n', "g")
endfunction

which I just tried in these mappings:

xnoremap * <C-c>/<C-r>=GetSelection()<CR><CR>
xnoremap # <C-c>?<C-r>=GetSelection()<CR><CR>

and it seemed to work as expected: all occurrences of foo were highlighted and pressing n moved to next occurrence:
