I presume that there is a typo in the original post and...

If you start a 64-bit gdb, and immediately connect it to a 32-bit target, gdb will think the target is 32 bits.

Confirmed that this is fixed with gdb/openocd from their respective xml_registers branches (which have merged to their mainlines).

Does this mean that it's no longer necessary to explicitly pass set arch riscv:rv32 when connecting to a 32 bit target?
