You were close!
The problem you were having - which I hit too - was that in the later versions of activesupport everything isn't included so you need to require the libraries you need; which in this case was active_support/core_ext/hash/deep_merge.
I've updated the dependencies in the gemspec and added the activesupport require. If you clone from master, bundle and see if you can run the tests and then report back, that would be great.
