We're currently revamping the documentation and will definitely incorporate your feedback. I'll quickly answer your questions here and provide a more-complete writeup in the documentation.
- HyperDex validates stored datastructures. Lists, sets and maps are all validated thoroughly. Integers must be 8 bytes in little endian format. Strings may contain any combination of bytes. HyperDex is agnostic to the contents of strings.
- Things work best with smaller keys. Individual objects (key and values) are limited to at most 32MB in size. I've never tested anything above 2MB/object (key included). We'll be defining these constants more rigidly in a future release.

Thanks!
That answers my question, 2MB is plenty big enough for us. I just wanted to ensure strings are binary safe and needed a ballpark for a good segment-size when we start experimenting with the pattern that I mentioned in #53.

The datastructures are documented here: http://hyperdex.org/doc/latest/CAPI/
